FAQs: Chiropractic

What is chiropractic?
Your nervous system controls every function of your body. To be healthy, it is essential that your nervous system function properly and be free from any interference caused by subluxations (the bones of your spine (your vertebrae) moving out of position and causing pressure on your spinal nerves). Chiropractic is the treatment used to correct and/or reduce subluxations. Using chiropractic, doctors of chiropractic are able to treat a wide variety of conditions, aches, pains, and more.

What will happen during my first visit to Everybody’s Health for chiropractic care?
During your initial visit, your chiropractic physician will consult with you about your medical history, current conditions/pains/symptoms, and any sports injuries, car accidents, or other events that may have caused trauma to your body. You will undergo a basic exam and have X-rays taken of your spine to determine the course of treatment.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?
In chiropractic, an “adjustment” is when your doctor of chiropractic corrects or reduces the subluxations of your spine.

What will happen at my first chiropractic adjustment?
After your initial consultation with your chiropractor, you will come back for your first adjustment. Many things can cause our spines to become mis-aligned – sports, injuries, accidents, everyday activities, sitting at a desk all day, etc. These mis-alignments of the spine, or “subluxations,” can contribute to aches, pains, and many common conditions. The doctor will use his hands to manipulate your spine in a way that brings it in line and closer to a “normal” curvature.

Is it normal to have soreness or pain after a chiropractic adjustment?
Your chiropractic adjustment itself should not be painful; however, after your first few chiropractic adjustments, you may experience minor soreness. This is normal, and is caused by the muscles around your spine reacting as your spine is adjusted. If you experience soreness, ice the affected area for relief.

What kind of training does my chiropractor have?
A doctor of chiropractic attends a Chiropractic College and receives a doctorate degree. Your chiropractor is extensively trained in anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, kinesiology, and nutrition.

What is a “wellness program”?
At Everybody’s Health, we have found that the best way to get the maximum benefit from chiropractic care is to start patients on a “wellness program.” Our wellness program starts with 3 visits per week for 4 weeks. During these visits, you’ll have a chiropractic adjustment and an electric stimulation session. After these 12 visits, you will have 2 appointments per week, then 1 appointment per week, and finally, 1 appointment per month.

How long does it typically take after starting to receive chiropractic treatment to start feeling improvements in my symptoms/pains/overall health?
Each person and condition is different. Many people feel better after just a few treatments; however, others may needs multiple sessions.

How can chiropractic help to treat sports-related injuries or pains?
Almost every professional sports team now has a chiropractor on staff. This is because chiropractic can be extremely beneficial for daily maintenance and improvement of stamina & flexibility, as well as for the treatment of sports-related injuries, aches, and pains. If you have had a sports-related injury, visit Everybody’s Health for an initial consultation to determine how chiropractic can best treat your condition.

Is chiropractic safe for children?
Yes, chiropractic can be quite beneficial for children. Children experience subluxations, which put pressure on their spinal nerves, just as they do in adults. Children can have their first chiropractic exam when they are only newborns.

Is chiropractic safe when I am pregnant?
According to the American Pregnancy Association, chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe. Changes to the spine occur during pregnancy and can be helped with chiropractic care. All chiropractors are trained to work with pregnant women.

What coverage does my insurance offer for chiropractic?
All insurance companies are different in the coverage they offer for chiropractic. It is typical for an insurance provider to cover a specified number of visits per year. If you are unsure of your coverage for chiropractic, visit our office so that we can help you, or contact your insurance company. In the event that your insurance provider does not cover chiropractic, or you are in need of more chiropractic visits than are covered during the year, Everybody’s Health also offers a cash payment option.

FAQs: Massage Therapy

I’ve always thought that massage therapy is just for relaxation – are there also health benefits?
There are physical, mental, and emotional benefits from massage therapy. Massage therapy loosens and stretches muscles, improves blood flow and oxygen flow to cells, helps rid metabolic wastes acquired from exercise or lack of exercise, promotes digestion and releases endorphins. Massage therapy reduces stress and makes you more calm and alert. Massage therapy can also reduce anxiety levels and provides a human connection that people need for a feeling of wellness.

What can I expect during my first massage with Everybody’s Health?
You will fill out a medical history form and then the therapist will ask questions to determine the areas you need and would like to have worked on. If you have any specific conditions, these will be addressed to determine the appropriate care. Your treatment will be tailored to meet your specific needs.

Do I have to undress completely to have a massage?
You always have the option to remain partially dressed for your massage. For a full body massage, most patients completely undress; however, some choose to keep their undergarments on. You will be given complete privacy to undress before the massage. During the massage, you will always be covered by a sheet or blanket except for the part of the body being treated. Your privacy will always be respected -- if something makes you uncomfortable, tell your massage therapist and he or she will be happy to make you more comfortable.

How can massage therapy work in conjunction with my chiropractic treatment?
Massage therapy is a natural complement for chiropractic care. Massage helps to relax and loosen muscles, which allows for easier and more beneficial chiropractic adjustments. Because Everybody’s Health offers chiropractic and massage services at one location, we can easily set up a wellness program for you that includes both.

Am I able to request that my massage therapist is a female/male?
Yes, Everybody’s Health has both female and male massage therapists. If you feel more comfortable with one or the other, feel free to make that request at the time you schedule your massage.

FAQs: Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of needles into specific points in the skin and muscles of the body. These points were determined and mapped out by the Chinese over thousands of years. Recent research shows these acupuncture points do exist. The needles promote the flow of energy called Qi (pronounced “chee”). This flow of energy needs to be connected for the body to run properly and having an acupuncture treatment returns your body to a connected state.

What conditions can acupuncture help to treat?
There are many conditions that acupuncture can help treat. These include, but are not limited to: stress, asthma, allergies, depression, constipation, sports injuries, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, colds, flu, headache, insomnia, pre-menstrual syndrome, sciatica, tendonitis, and infertility. Contact Everybody’s Health to determine how acupuncture can help you.

What should I expect during my first visit to Everybody’s Health for acupuncture?
A medical history will be taken and you will be asked general questions to determine your condition. A course of treatment will be developed specifically for your needs. Depending on your treatment, you may start to feel the beneficial effects right away while others may need a few treatments to begin feeling the effects. Most people feel energized after one treatment.

Is acupuncture painful?
For most people, the procedure is painless. Some patients express fear of needles during their first visit. However, the needles used during acupuncture are as thin as human hair and most patients lose all worries after they feel the first few sensations of the needles. At Everybody’s Health, we understand that acupuncture is new to many people; therefore each session is tailored to individual need and sensitivities.
